Author Bali Rai encourages Kingston students to read more

Award winning author, Bali Rai has spoken to nearly two hundred students about his love of books, multiculturalism and the benefits of reading.

They are all themes which run through many of his novels, including Killing Honour and Rani & Sukh. The students enjoyed hearing Bali read extracts from (Un)arranged Marriage and The Last Taboo.

The British born son of illiterate immigrants, Bali attends between 50 and 100 events each year for children and young adults where he gives an engaging insight into his childhood experiences growing up in Leicester.

The largest racially mixed city in Europe after London, Leicester has provided Bali with first-hand experience of living in a multicultural, multi-racial community.

An avid reader since childhood, Bali is passionate about convincing young people of the advantages of reading for pleasure, quoting studies which have shown a person who reads is more likely to succeed in life and fulfil their potential than a non-reader.
