Two people have escaped from a house fire on Hawks Road in Kingston this morning.

Four fire engines and around 20 firefighters had to fight the blaze.

The fire is believed to have started under the stairs and damaged the best part of the ground floor.

Firefighters say the fire travelled upstairs and spread to the roof.

Two people left the house before the Brigade arrived. Both were uninjured.

Station Manager Nic Myatt, who was at the scene said: "We believe the fire started under the stairs and thankfully two people inside heard their smoke alarm going off and got out of the house uninjured."

"It is very important that people have at least one smoke alarm and test it to make sure it works."
