Mind the toads in Ham

Motorists passing through Ham are being asked to watch out for toads crossing the road.
Each year, hundreds of amphibians move from Ham Common to a small section of Church Road to spawn.
Around 100 are killed each year by passing cars during mating season.
To ensure the safety of the toads, a small section of Church Road (between Ham Gate Avenue and Latchmere Lane) will be closed from 4pm Friday the 15th March until 8am Monday 1st April.
Temporary signs have been put up by the Council to warn drivers about the migration and all residents in the area have been notified by post.
There is a diversion to avoid the closed road, which is via Ham Gate Avenue, Upper Ham Road and Church Road and vice versa.
