I was surprised to learn from the horse's mouth, 1 May 2010 in High Street, New Malden that my MP claims rent of up 20k for his office in what looks like a dump of a building in Surbiton otherwise known as the Liberal Democratic Party Headquarters at 21 Berrylands Road KT3 8QX. The building is a former shop in what is no more than a back street shopping parade yet former MP Ed Davey was proud to boast he had personally negotiated the rent and thought it good value for what is nothing more than office space (desk and phone service) he uses on occasions (surgeries - an hour a week) housed inside the LIbdem's HQ. He saw nothing wrong in the amount for rent he gets tax payers to pay for this facility and argued all MP do the same - well they may, "but that doesn't make it right", I said. What he failed to understand or choose to ignore is that it is odious that he as a Libdem negotiated a rent with his landlord who is none other than the Party he represents. If it is wrong to rent office space from a family member or a company an MP has an interest under Parliamentary rules, how is it right renting office space from a political party? Mr Davey's office space is owned by the LibDems so what this means is that the tax payer not only foots the bill but is funding the Libdems through the rent. This canno tbe right! Now to my mind, the majority people of our great nation from all walks of life do not affilate, support or even vote for the LIbdems, so why is this party being effectively funded in this way by tax payers?
