English Heritage  has

published a report highlighting that a number of historic sites in

Kingston are at risk of decay due to the recession and it’s up to local

people to help save them. The Heritage at Risk Register 2010 highlights

that there has been a significant decline in the restoration of Grade I

and II listed buildings since 2007.

In Kingston the sites

that are at risk include:

  • The former Head Post Office at 42 Eden Street
  • Kingston Telephone

    Exchange in Ashdown Road

  • Gallows Conduit in Coombe
  • Castle Hill Earthwork

    in Chessington

If you want to get

involved in the conservation and planning of Kingston, and want to find

more about the many historic sites on your doorstep  you can join The

Kingston Upon Thames Society. The Amenity Society is a voluntary

organisation that does a wide range of activities from being the

guardians of Gallows Conduit and running the Heritage Open Days in

September, to being involved in major planning decisions put before the

council. More information about the society can be found here.
