Following the
success at the Kingston Green Guardian Awards, Transition Town Kingston
has been judged the best green group in South London for its work in
2009.
Steering group members were in attendance at the awards ceremony at
the Wyndham Grand Hotel, Chelsea Harbour, on Friday 26th February to
accept the award on behalf of TTK's members.
Kingston award-winners Chris Hine and Paul Brandon were also recognised
in the Green Household and Green Concept categories respectively. The
awards are sponsored by the Newsquest media group and by councils
across the whole of South London, from Bexley in the east to Hounslow
in the west, putting Kingston's achievement impressively in context.
TTK founder member Majeed Neky said 'We truly were not expecting to
win. It's difficult when you're so involved to step back and think
about what's been achieved. More than anything so far I think we've
brought together a lot of good work that's going on and tried to shape
it into a vision for Kingston. This award is for everyone who has given
their time and energy to help out and we hope that both veteran and
newly forming groups and projects make the most of the great publicity
boost it'll provide.'
Alongside a wooden trophy made from recycled materials and a
commemorative framed newspaper article, part of the prize was two pairs
of tickets to the Eden Project. TTK members have decided to contribute
these as one of the prizes in a raffle to be drawn at the Big Launch
Party at Kingston Working Men's Club on Saturday 17th April.
Before the Big Launch, TTK's next big project is the groundbreaking Our Kingston, Our Future
workshops and documentary on March 20th and 21st, for which places are still available - see
