WILLAND Rovers boss Clive Jones was a happy man after seeing his new system start to work well as they beat Cullompton Rangers 6-1 in their opening friendly.
The Silver Street chief felt sides started to work them out towards the end of last season, so he has switched shape ahead of the new campaign.
He played with a three-man attack against Cully and felt it worked as six different players got on the scoresheet.
Jones said: “It was a good workout and the players responded to my desire for us to play a different way this coming season.
“I felt at the end of last year that sides were beginning to work us out and I think the new system will offer something different.
“It’s based on a three-pronged attack and the fact we had six different scorers gives me belief the players will work the system well.”
Dean Stamp, Shaun Goff, Joey Hawes and Danny Baily put Willand 4-0 ahead at half-time at Speeds Meadow on Friday night, with Baily and Goff also hitting the woodwork. After the break Rovers gave a first run out to former Exeter City youth midfielder Aaron Doble.
Ben Mammola made it 5-0 and, after the home side notched a late penalty, Paul Pocock completed the scoring.
Witheridge beat Appledore 3-0 at home with two goals from Shane Kingston and the other from Jake Crush.
